Electric truck maker Rivian Automotive Inc. is laying off 240 people in Palo Alto and 479 total statewide. The Irvine-based company plans to cut the workers April 14, Karen Prince, its vice president of people operations, said in a letter to California employment and local officials. Rivian has already notified affected employees, Prince said in the letter dated Feb. 1 but made public Thursday. "This mass layoff is expected to be permanent," she said. Rivian representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
